Our Core Values

Our core values. These may or may not be the dictionary meaning of the values on this list, but this is how we see and define them at Collabo Community Relieved Face
  • Communication: You don't need to be a native English speaker. You just need to convey the right and needed information and/or feedbacks, in the right place, at the right time and to the right people.
  • Community: Building products is not the most important to us. We strive to make meaningful and impactful connection with anyone who joins or makes contact with us. We are people with wants, needs and values connecting us. We cater to each others needs as much as is within our power to do. Uplifting others even as we improve on ourselves. We strive to create an inviting and hospitable environment, one that will be difficult for people to part with.
  • Fun: Enjoying your work, and making work enjoyable for persons whose work depends on your work or that your work affects. Having an interesting life apart from staring at the screen working everyday.
  • Quality: Recognising that "I'm still learning" is not an excuse for producing work that is of low standard. We work with standards that industry professionals appreciate, and nudge you towards making contributions that are of high standard regardless of your level of experience - contributions you and us will be confident to issue as "receipts" any where, any day, any time.
  • Respect: Regarding and treating others as you would love to be regarded and treated by others.
  • Simplicity: Ability to make things easy to use, do or understand for others, and to be able to devise non-complex means of doing things.
  • Truth: Respectfully telling something as it is (to yourself and to others), without being negatively diplomatic.

Still On Values...

Some more values important to us. These may or may not be the dictionary meaning of the values on this list, but this is how we see and define them at Collabo Community Relieved Face

  • Accountability: Taking responsibility for and being responsible to yourself and persons in your care.
  • Contribution: Helping others grow in your own small or big ways, even as you grow.
  • Creativity: Developing the mind to not stick to the regular way of thinking, in other to conjure novel but meaningful and impactful solutions.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Recognising that persons you are or will be dealing with are from different backgrounds, race, ethnicity, religion, beliefs, gender, age groups etc, and that no one is treated inferior or less than the other because of this.
  • Empathy: Having the capacity or ability to share the emotions, feelings or experiences of other persons. Imagine yourself in the situation of other persons, experiencing their emotions, ideas and/or opinions.

Our History

What we were one time, and what we gradually transformed into. Well, let's just say this is a "community release note" Winking Face
  • February 2021: The community was created by Mary Obiagba with the name Code Collabo. A mere personal/portfolio Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) community project at the time, for her and any other persons who contribute to showcase on their portfolio. Only Software Engineering and Technical Writing projects existed in the community at the time. Exactly one year later, she landed her first full time Software (Product) Engineering job. The  Node Mongo (v1.0.2)  project from the Code Collabo community was one of the projects the employer saw and contacted her about. Not much activities took place in Code Collabo FOSS community after this period.
  • March 2023: Code Collabo FOSS community became very active again, creating a (remote) experiment program (with paid and unpaid) open source opportunities to equip participants with tech job experience. UI/UX Design was introduced later in May 2023. This was still consistent with 2021 happenings. At the time the community was just about helping new techies or techies with little or no experience to upgrade from dummy "to-do app" projects.
  • October 2023: The community has undergone some restructuring, and now goes by the new name Collabo Community. There is one sub-community under the Collabo Community at the moment: the Code Collabo FOSS community (i.e. Collabo Community for techies). Code Collabo folks build and come up with the tech solutions for solving the problems that the Collabo Community seeks to address. A by-product is that techies who join the community get quality projects to contribute to and make meaningful impact even as they learn.

Our Community

Collabo Community now focuses on using tech to solve problems we notice plague communities and collaboration efforts, based our past and present experiences in being part of a community. Particularly problems that causes discontinuity of many of these communities or products born out of collaboration (the opposite of these kind of problems are reflected in our values).
Projects within our community are mostly open source. We welcome you to contribute to Collabo Community projects regardless of where you come from, your skill level or the area of interest you are pursuing in tech. We look forward to having you around!

Our Community Culture

Collabo community is about making life easier for the people you are working with or alongside, through your conduct (not just words only), without expecting the Community Coordinator or other contributors within Collabo Community to be the only ones making life easier for you. What the community is about is what we expect from you. Based on our mission and vision, our community culture also includes helping people to learn our ways (if they are interested or want to). This is also reflected in the processes, workflows and projects we develop at Collabo community. Because it is that "way" we want to share with the world, and we can't do it without people. We see you as valuable, just as you see us as valuable.
